What is a respectable diamond size for an engagement ring?

After researching my girlfriend’s tastes, I found the perfect setting for her. Long story short, I found the setting online for a third of the cost it was in the store. Therefore, I’d like to purchase the ring online.

I’m still diamond shopping and am looking to get the best price. I’m wondering what you think are respectable ratings for a diamond. I’m looking for ratings for each of the 4 Cs.

Also, the ring is a three-stone Trellis setting. What size side stones should I get in relation to the center diamond? For example, if the center diamond is 75 points, the side diamonds should be no bigger than X points.)

I’d prefer it if you stuck to the absolute lowest rating you find acceptable. (For example, a 50 point diamond is the smallest acceptable diamond in my opinion.) Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It’s not so cut and dry for me as far as how many pointers to choose. It is somewhat dependent on the shape you choose, I personally have a diamond that measures 6mmx4mm yet is only .34 points (1/3rd ct. pear) Being that you are going with a 3 stone, that suggests round or princess most likely.

Color-H or better for rounds minimum, for emerald, asscher, princess, G minimum

Clarity-SI1 or better unless its an open step cut like asscher or emerald, then VS2 minimum

Carat size- depends somewhat also on the size finger your lady has. A size 4 ring finger, the diamond looks much different than on a size 9 woman.

Imo, 1/3rd carat is acceptable, that is .29-.36 points
then is 3/8ths carat which is .37-.44
1/2 carat is .45-.58
5/8ths is .59-.68
then 3/4 ct which is .69-.82
7/8ths is .83-.94
then its 1 ct till 1.10

Suggestion, buy an off size, they are much less expensive, so go for 5/8ths or 7/8ths, suggest buying online where the markup is much much less.

As for the sidestones-what looks best is about half, so if the center stone is 1/2 ct the sides should not exceed 1/4 ct.

Suggest a minimum of a very good cut.
None, negligible or faint flourescence.
Suggest AGS or GIA certified, avoid EGL.
For a diamond with corners, suggest the girdle to be medium to sl. thick even thick, thin girdles with corners tend to chip.
for rounds thin-thick is acceptable
watch your l/w ratios, my minimum would be 1:1.02 for rounds or princess, though they say 1:1.05 is acceptable

watch your table and depth percentages.

you are going to find different charts that say different things, for rounds you don’t want the depth over 62.5 really. And if the depth is high then the table should be smaller otherwise you run the risk of fisheyes. A large table has a more glassy effect, and should accompany a shallower depth

In general the fancies like oval pear cushion stay betw 58-64
princess are a deeper stone, still wouldn’t consider deeper than 75%

Suggestion on the wedding band if you are going with stones, the diamonds should be 4-5 pointers ea. any bigger and it will take away from the e-ring which is the centerpiece
